イギリスの生物学者Ｊ・Ｂ・Ｓ・ホールデン（1892-1964）によれば、新しい理論が受け入れられるまでには次の４つの段階を経るんだそうです。

第１段階：こんな理論はくだらないたわごとだ。
第２段階：興味深くはあるが、ひねくれた意見だ。
第３段階：正しくはあるが、さほど重要ではない。
第４段階：私はずっとこの理論を唱えていたのだ。
